Serving Survivors and Families for 40+ Years

For nearly four decades, Domestic Violence Services of Wilmington (DVSW) has stood as a lifeline for survivors and their families throughout southeastern North Carolina. What began as a small group of local advocates has grown into a comprehensive support network offering safety, healing, and hope to thousands in our community.

Every program, partnership, and outreach effort is rooted in one simple mission — to end the cycle of domestic violence and empower survivors to reclaim their independence and dignity.

Our History

Founded in 1985, DVSW began as a grassroots response to the growing need for survivor support in New Hanover County. With the dedication of volunteers and local partners, we opened our first emergency shelter—offering a safe haven for individuals and families escaping violence at home.

Over the years, our organization has expanded to include counseling, legal advocacy, children’s services, prevention education, and community outreach. Today, we continue to serve thousands of survivors each year, guided by compassion and a commitment to justice.

Our Mission

We are dedicated to breaking the silence surrounding domestic violence by providing safety, support, and advocacy for survivors, and by educating the community to create lasting change.
DVSW strives to ensure that every individual, regardless of background, gender, or circumstance, has access to the resources needed to live a life free from abuse.

Our Vision

A community where every person feels safe, respected, and valued, where domestic violence is no longer tolerated, and every survivor’s voice is heard.

Through a Trauma-Informed & Survivor-Centered Approach, Our Programs Include:

  • Emergency Shelter & Safety Planning – Immediate refuge and long-term safety strategies.

  • 24/7 Crisis Hotline – Compassionate, confidential help anytime, day or night.

  • Counseling & Advocacy Services – Licensed counselors and trained advocates offering emotional support and guidance through legal and personal challenges.
